H.P. - Inspirational Music Videos

Inspirational Music Videos

Caro Emerald - I Belong To You

  • The video has an almost neo-noir quality, largely taking place in a black and white with classic 1920's costumes and themes.
  • The video does however, feature modern images, such as the Range Rover car that takes Emerald to her concert, which takes place in a modern setting in full colour.
  • The high contrast in the black and white sections give a gothic atmosphere to these parts of the video. A quality worth noting is the colour combination of black, white and red, which establishes a strong visual style for the video.
  • The narrative follows the artist as she meets with a man at her home, implied to be her lover, who she has to leave to perform at a concert. The man appears in the audience of at the concert in progress.
  • The two sections of the video, the black and white house sequence and the colour concert sequence, are cross-cut throughout the video. The video does however, retain two distinct narrative sections and an overall linear timeline, despite this cross-cutting.
  • The inclusion of the concert into the narrative allows the logical inclusion of performance shots into the video, without detracting from the story being established. This is an interesting technique and one that is worth considering for our own video.

George Ezra - Blame It On Me

  • The video's narrative follows the artist as he encounters various misfortunes.
  • It begins with an Asian man asking the artist "Are you sure you want to follow the yellow brick road?". The meaning behind this isn't initially obvious, making it an engaging start to the video.
  • The artist sings to the camera while walking, which is cross-cut with the narrative. Both of the lines of action feature the artist, making the song appear more personal to him.
  • High key lighting and high dynamic range keep the atmosphere light and harmless, contributing to an entertaining and nonthreatening video.
  • There is a clear structure in terms of pacing throughout the video, with the narrative building up towards the end when the artist is hit by a car then walks through a police shootout.
  • It is important for us to note progression like this and include it in our own narrative to produce a high quality music video.

Caravan Palace - Rock It For Me

  • A mix of 2D and 3D animation with classic early 20th century styling.
  • Like the Caro Emerald video, it is worth noting that the colour scheme for this video is also black, white and red and is again used to great visual effect.
  • The general narrative is that an alternative universe version of Paris is attacked by aliens. The response from the scientists is to make a robot to kill the aliens, but an instrument is let into the robot and it dances instead of fights. It still managed to scare off the aliens however and it climbs the Eiffel Tower and hangs onto it acting as a searchlight.
  • The video has a unique style which blends futuristic images, 1920's period images and a B-movie style plot. It serves as a good visual metaphor for the Electro Swing genre.
  • This video could serve to influence our video style if we choose to follow an electro swing genre song, most notably with its colour scheme and creative visual ideas.
