K.H. - Brighton Trip Reflection

What went well:
  • We experimented using a variety of shot sizes and and angles, meeting the requirements for the task, having several low angles and high angles and we worked well as a team, improvising shots as we saw a good photo opportunity and using the naturalistic shots as a general theme
  • We had a chance to practice some of the shots we'd be using for our main production, for example we practiced setting up a shot with light reflecting off of glasses, and while this shot was not entirely successful, we learnt that we needed more intense lighting to create a striking reflection and the type of glasses are also a contributing factor
  • We used a variety of locations in Brighton and made the best use of what was available to us, from darker areas like the underside of the pier to more open areas further down the beach such  as the carousels
  • We collected a large number of stills, meeting the ten we required, and collected a number that were of a high enough quality that they can be used for the potential album covers and magazine pages
What could have been improved:
  • We should have planned what we would shoot more extensively to maintain a more consistent aesthetic throughout the video and to save time that was wasted exploring locations that weren't useful for our video
  • We could have made better use of the track, we didn't have a particular tracking shot planned and had trouble transporting the track so we needed to come up with a shot as soon as we could, which led to it being weaker than it could have been
  • Due to our lack of a consistent aesthetic, we had to adjust the contrast and exposure of certain shots, which made it more difficult in editing to create a consistent style for the video
In the end we decided to exclude Brighton as a potential location for shooting, primarily because the open nature of the environments are ill fitting of the gothic tone and period setting demanded by our concept. Despite there being areas in Brighton that could be useful in some ways to our final production, we already have stills of these locations and have no need to revisit
