H.P. - Reflection on Shoot: Day 3 Action Line 3

On our third day of shooting on 8th November we were in the Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells capturing footage for our third line of action. This sequence is set the day before the performance and shows Caro's spree of blood drinking, the cause of her hangover in the second line of action.

  • We completely swapped our roles for this day, with Freya and Kurtis taking charge of the camera work and cinematography. I took over the secondary roles, helping direct when needed, preparing and applying make-up and fangs and capturing vlog footage. We chose to make this change on this shoot because the sequence has a slightly different style to the rest of the video, focusing on the victims and being more of a narrative section, free of any lip syncing. It also allowed me to star in the video in a larger role than we had previously planned, which we thought was necessary after our change of plan in removing the other two vampire characters.
  • We are very happy with the footage we captured and it has come out pretty much exactly as planned. There were however a couple of minor issues with our outcome.
  • There was one moment in particular where a fault in communications between our group members meant that we did not capture a shot that we wanted. As Kurtis and I were both acting in front of the camera, we were not aware that a final movement we were making in the scene was not being captured each take. We assumed that it had been captured and only found out later that it hadn't. Freya mentioned that she might not have caught it but we assumed she did, which was a wrong move on our parts. This issue is easily rectifiable however, as we have a wealth of other footage that can easily fill the time gap.

  • Another issue that we encountered was that near the end of shooting we realised that we had no captured one of our earlier shots in the right way. The shot was of me, with Eleanor appearing from behind me ready to bite me. Our plan was to have her show her teeth which we could later use VFX to make them shoot out. However we hadn't shot her opening her mouth, so we decided to re-shoot this scene at the end of our filming in that location. Again, this was an easily rectified problem, but one we should have spotted earlier by following our shot list more carefully.
  • Overall our day of filming was very successful as it allowed us to have a change of roles and capture some fantastic looking footage for our third line of action.
